San Diego: Day 6
Day 6
Today we head back home. The flight is leaving at 8:30am which sounded OK when we booked it.
So, we need to be up early. We are a little behind to start with, but we grabbed the breakfast sandwich to go, and we are back on track. We arrive at the rental car drop-off and start unloading the car, but the attendant stopped us, and offered to just take the car back to the terminal so we don't have to ride the bus (That's trying harder). After unloading our bags we check in, and get bumped to the front of security, I think because our flight was leaving so soon. Either way, we are now waiting for the next 45 minutes at the gate. Eva is wide awake, and climbing all over the seats. It looks like there are several other babies on this flight with us. After a diaper change, we board the plane, and find our seats. People are less than thrilled that a baby is sitting anywhere near them. This flight is the longest so far at 4.5 hours. There is a gentleman sitting in the third seat in this row, so no bonus seat on this flight. Well, the flight goes mostly as planned. Eva got a little antsy a couple of times, but a couple walks up and down the aisle seemed to cure it. No screaming or crying! As a side note, I have now officially changed two diapers on an airplane, which is not as bad as you would think. There is actually a bit of room in those bathrooms when you only have to stand up in front of the changing table. And...Flight is over and we arrive at Detroit (DTW).
At DTW we have a 3 hour layover :( so we take our time and travel back and forth on the tram a couple times before deciding to eat at Quiznos.
Having an infant is a great excuse to do the things I want to do, but avoid to look grown-up.
We rode on the moving walkways about 20 times, and up and down the escalator about 8 times.
After that fun, we rode on the tram back and forth twice before she fell fast asleep in my arms.
Until you have a child, it is tough to understand how beautiful a sleeping infant really is, but there are fewer things that are as cool as holding a peaceful sleeping baby.
She slept for about an hour after we made it back to our gate to Selena, who was sorting through the pictures of the trip to pick some to post online.
About 15 minutes to boarding the flight clerk announced that the plane is overbooked, and anyone willing to be bumped to a 10:45 flight to GRR should volunteer. I know the benefits of that, so I began to explain the free flight to Nina, but just as we were deciding whether to accept the offer, several others had already volunteered, so no such luck. Anyways, our flight get us home in time for Eva to go to bed on time, which is a good way to get back to normal. This flight is only 35 minutes long, so Eva behaved just fine, and we arrived on time, and Home at last.
Overall, the trip was a huge success, and it will likely be our last for a while, so I am relieved that it went as well as one could hope for.
