Old Navy - Are you serious?

Eva turned one this week.  And with that comes some cool new clothes for my sweetie.
Well, we got a pair of flip-flops from her great grandma, from Old Navy.  They are too big, and we wanted to exchange them for the correct size.
So, we went to the store to do a simple swap for the right size.  At least until we got there, and they explained that the policy has changed...
The new policy is below.

"For returns without a receipt, or with an even exchange receipt:

Returns without an original sales receipt (or with an even exchange receipt) will receive: A Merchandise Certificate by mail for current selling price. Only the person whose name appears on the certificate may redeem Old Navy Merchandise Certificates. Merchandise Certificates are redeemable at Old Navy stores only.Valid I.D. is required for issuance and redemption."

So you are screwed if you just want to change a size 5 for a 3.  They want to give us a gift certificate (THROUGH THE MAIL!) for the current value of the item.
So, if you get a gift that is the wrong size, and it was on sale, and is no longer, you can't even exchange it for the same item in a smaller size.  And, with a one year old, by the time we get the gift card, she will need another size anyways, or it will not be the season for flip-flops anymore.  As far as I know this is the only store that has such a policy, and I can't imagine it is worth it.  My wife shops at Old Navy almost exclusively, and I wear something from there virtually every day of the week.

I cannot see any reason for the change in policy other than to upset the customers that have to go through the new process.  If they gave immediate store credit, like everyone else, chances are customers would buy other stuff along with the exchange.  Instead, we walked out, and decided to just wait for Eva to grow into them.  I am sure they like to think that everyone should give a gift receipt, but that just doesn't happen all that often.  To explain to someone that their gift is too small, or worse if it happens to be horrible looking, is ridiculous.

So, Old Navy you have officially been placed on my 'poop list'.

I agree that Old Navy is pissing me off lately - come on. I filled out a surcey online to get 10% off next purchase and I put on there that their new policy makes me not want to shop there anymore.
